Championships and success are great, but a loving team environment is even more important for immigrant and refugee youth. It provides a sense of belonging and safety in a complex world in which bicultural identity makes the question “Where do I belong?” more pressing.  Team environments are a place to learn and practice valuable social-emotional and  relational skills; hard conversations, navigating disappointment, empathy, service, and graciousness.  Teams are a place to learn how to give and receive support, to invite others into setbacks and failure, to create positive peer pressure that provides a push towards focus and risk taking.

City Heights Runners began with a burning desire to address inequity youth in our community face in sports across the board.  There are no parent booster programs funded by $500 checks, and most parents are working long hours to pay rent, not organizing bake sales.  Here are some core areas that we feel create equity in our sport for the youth we love.

Activity/ Resource
What is it?
Why does it matter?
Year-round Training Weekly practices for over 30 runners 48 weeks out of the year.

Our athletes need a safe after school space to train, many would not feel safe running on their own in our neighborhood. Offseason training allows for more time to spend on the overall athletic development of underdeveloped athletes.

Shoes We provide over 120 pairs of training shoes per season at an extremely discount rate!

Our athletes often don’t have the means to buy multiple pairs of shoes throughout the year, and rotating shoes is critical to prevent injury. Not having shoes is a barrier to access to our sport for low income families.

Camp A week long camp in Santa Cruz CA for team bonding, family style camping, college visits, educational field trips, and trail runs!

A loving team environment is accelerated when young people build connections through hard work and play! Exposure to natural beauty, educational opportunities, expands our students' worlds and  aspirations!

City Heights Runners 5K & Kid's Run A community 5K for fundraising and exposure. Our students have an opportunity to facilitate a local 5K, experience the pride of ownership, and also expose children to the sport!
Nutritious Food Nutritious food to fuel training and recovery. Food is fuel, and our students don’t get enough of it.
